I write because I’m endlessly curious about people and the questions that shape their lives.
A book made me wonder what would happen if Mary Magdalene were alive and living in New York City today.
A retreat in Costa Rica led me to a vampire story about a man who had been searching across decades for the woman he lost, and the Vampire who wanted to help him.
Watching a talented actress onstage made me wonder what story I could create for her – and suddenly, I find myself exploring the life of Fanny Brice.
That is where my stories begin. With a question.
I don’t write in one genre because life doesn’t exist in one genre. It can be funny, frightening, heartbreaking, absurd, spiritual, and hopeful – sometimes all at once. I’m drawn to people who are searching for something: love, redemption, identity, purpose, or simply one more chance to get life right. Perhaps that’s because I believe it’s never too late to begin again.
At 69, I’m still asking questions. I’m still discovering new stories. And I’m more excited about what I have yet to write than anything I’ve already written.
That’s why I write.
